Week 17 – Damilano Licinquevigne Barolo

This wine was another recommendation from my friends at Tutto Vino in Dublin, OH.  I was there for happy hour with a friend and used this opportunity to try my wine of the week.

This Barolo from Piedmont, Italy was a nice, smooth choice.  It was a very aromatic wine.  I smelled vanilla, leather and dark fruits immediately and was very excited.  The taste included what I thought was cherry and a vanilla or caramel.  I was surprised how smooth this wine was – almost no tannins what-so-ever.  Also, it was not dry at all so those of you who do not enjoy dry reds, this one is for you.

I asked Carl (who also selected the wine) to select three cheeses to pair this wine with.  He selected Manchego, Brie, and a Pecorino.  The Manchego and Brie were my favorites with this wine.  The sharp bite of the Manchego was a great contrast to the silkiness of the wine.  The Brie was a nice salty complement to the fruit flavor.

Recommend:  Yes - if you do not like dry reds.
